Frequently Asked Questions
What is a print edition? A print edition is a set of multiple copies of the same image. It is a relatively inexpensive, yet still beautiful and collectible medium. There are two types of editions—limited and open. In a limited edition, a fixed number of copies is produced with the understanding that no further copies will be produced later. Limited print editions are traditionally signed, numbered, and sometimes titled by the artist. The number indicates the unique impression and the total edition size (for instance “3/50” would be the third print in an edition of fifty). An open edition has no pre-determined quantity, and is not necessarily numbered. Do you do giclée printing? iolabs produces archival, fine-art prints that can be called giclée prints, if you’d like. The term giclée (pronounced "Zhee-clay") is a French term for "spray." The term originated in the early 1990s with the emergence of digital inkjet printmaking. A traditional giclée print would have been printed from a Scitex Iris inkjet printer. Today, giclée prints are produced on one of many types of printers, such as Epson, HP or Canon. Advances in printer and ink technology have allowed for much greater tonal range, detail, and colorfastness in today's giclée prints. |
How large can you print my image?
For archival papers and fabrics printed using Ultrachrome inks, we can print up to 43.5" wide by virtually any length. Can I make just one print? Absolutely. You can order just one print, or many prints. As you might expect, per-print pricing decreases the more copies you order. iolabs does not have a minimum size for a print order, however we do have a minimum printing fee of $25. Can you ship to other countries? Yes, we often ship to foreign countries using the US Postal Service. Customs fees are paid by the client. What file format and what resolution do you need? For photographic and fine art editions, our ideal file format is a flattened RGB tiff. We also accept jpegs, PDFs, and native Adobe PhotoShop formats. Optimum image resolution is 300-360 dpi at the final size to be printed. Resolution below 150 dpi may show pixilation. Display and design files can be submitted in most popular design programs, such as InDesign, Illustrator, or Quark. Please accompany design files with image links and fonts (or outlined fonts). more FAQs |
